BWP (Boiling Water Proof) plywood is layered wood veneers bonded with a waterproof phenolic resin — the traditional premium choice for kitchens. HDHMR (High-Density High Moisture Resistance) board is a dense, uniform engineered board made from wood fibres, with no grain and no core gaps.

Which to use where
- Under-sink and base units that see the most water: BWP plywood is the safest choice.
- Wall units, tall units and shutters: HDHMR is excellent and gives a smoother, more consistent finish.
- Many good kitchens mix both — BWP where water is a daily risk, HDHMR elsewhere — to balance durability and cost.
Avoid
Plain MDF or commercial (MR-grade) ply in a kitchen. They cost less up front but swell and sag once moisture gets in — a false economy you pay for in a few years.

Is HDHMR waterproof?
HDHMR is highly moisture-resistant, not fully waterproof. It handles kitchen humidity and splashes well, but for units in constant contact with water — like under the sink — BWP plywood is the safer pick.
